GIG - Central Mining InstituteGIG - Central Mining Institute

The Central Mining Institute (GIG) is a scientific and development organization, subordinated to the Minister of Economy, working for the benefit of the mining industry and enterprises representing a wide pattern of branches - including SMEs, state and local administration, non-governmental and business support institutions and foreign partners. The overall goal is to keep in balance people-industry and environment nexus. The main subject of the activities includes mining engineering, environmental engineering, quality problems, clean coal technologies, environmental monitoring and management, education and training including social and economic issues. The Institute, being aware of the multidimensional impact of industry and technology on the environment provides research services, laboratory analysis, technical advisory, creates and implements technological and organizational solutions. GIG conducts a number of studies and research projects and has strong competencies in such areas as waste management, water processing and recycling of raw materials, environmental resources management, low-carbon and energy efficiency solutions, air protection and modernization of the energy sector, optimization of water and wastewater systems, water (rainwater) management, geospatial information systems, implementation of eco-innovative solutions and sustainable development of municipalities and regions. GIG has highly qualified staff and experience in these research fields and disciplines disposes of unique databases, research fields and specialist laboratories equipped with the facilities of the newest generation and during its more then 90-years activity has achieved a leading position in Poland and abroad by creating science development. The Institute uses its experience to develop new scientific specialties and to take up the world’s most important and challenging research topics in the range of clean coal technologies such as: underground coal gasification, CO2 storage and sequestration, hydrogen production from coal, zero-emission fossil fuel energy production, renewable energy resources and non-metal material engineering. The Institute’s research activities embraced also problem-solving of mineral resources exploitation industry, especially underground coal and metal ores mining. Mining industry of these resources are coupled with environmental challenges and therefore creates complex problems in the range of work safety, applied technologies, systemic environment protection and in the social sphere. Experts and research teams of GIG provide multidisciplinary services supporting achievement of sustainable development goals.

CEAMCEAM Foundation (Mediterranean Center for Environmental Studies)

CEAM Foundation is a centre of research, development and technological Innovation whose mission is to offer comprehensive proposals for environmental management in the domain of the atmosphere, ecosystems, human activities and their interactions. This work is carried out by our multidisciplinary team through different thematic activities:

  • Study of atmospheric pollution in urban, rural and industrial environments, and its impacts
  • Mitigation and adaptation to climate change and assessment of the carbon cycle
  • Forecast of extreme meteorological events (heat waves, torrential rain, etc)
  • Meteorology, atmospheric dynamics and numerical simulation
  • Prevention of forest fires and reforestation of burnt or degraded areas

Within its more than 25 years, CEAM’s activities range from basic research to solutions for priority environmental problems and to the development of new technologies and applications for private and public bodies. Our R&D activity also leads to scientific counselling tasks for environmental management policymaking at various levels, from the local level to that of the European Union.
CEAM hosts the EUPHORE Lab with one of the largest outdoor atmospheric simulation chambers worldwide. EUPHORE has an extensive and outstanding analytical infrastructure for assessing atmospheric chemical processes under real conditions and for testing instrumentation (from state-of-the-art to emerging technologies) and depolluting solutions. Field campaigns are also carried out for air quality characterization.
